Abstract

This essay deals with the phenomenon of gemination and the functioning of geminate consonants that play a significant role in the phonological system of the Arabic language. The author distinguishes two types of geminate consonants in the Arabic language − the primary type with geminate consonants representing strong phoneme with a significative function, and secondary type that appears as the result of phonetic processes. The author shows regularities of phonetic transformations leading to the emergence of secondary geminate that causes changes in the structure of a word, which no longer fits into a sustainable model of Arabic word-forms. The regularities concern mainly doubled verbs and verbal nouns. In conclusion the author assumes that the secondary gemination in the Arabic language is the result of the action of the general linguistic law of economy of articulatory efforts, enhanced in the process of colloquial Arabic development.
