METHODOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF USING SPANGLISH AS A LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL INSTRUMENT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF TEACHING SPANISH AS A SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The purpose of the present article is to analyze the current situation of Spanglish as a linguistic, social and cultural phenomenon, as well as to give various arguments in favor of or against teaching this phenomenon to the students of Spanish as a second foreign language.

Nowadays there is still no common opinion with regard to the degree of acceptance and recognition of this phenomenon. There are those who consider Spanglish as a dialect or a version of either Spanish or English, those who classify it as slang or even those who believe that we are dealing with the formation of a new language.

The current linguistic situation compels us to put special emphasis on teaching Spanish as a second foreign language at MGIMO University, which specializes in teaching languages for specific purposes. Taking into consideration the multipolarity of Spanish, its study should encompass knowledge in the field of social linguistics, the study of geography, economy and politics of countries as well as intercultural communication. Therefore, the study of the Spanglish phenomenon seems to us very relevant and important in the framework of teaching Spanish as a second foreign language at MGIMO.

The article proposes some ideas of how to work with the subject of Spanglish while teaching Spanish as a second foreign language. It gives some examples of activities aimed at exploring the interaction of English and Spanish, with the indication of their objectives and the skills they are meant to develop.
