SUPINE, PARTICIPLE, OR VERBAL ADJECTIVE? VERBAL FORMS WITH -EN INFLEXION IN MODERN DANISH
Abstract
The article explores the usage of participle II of strong verbs with -en and -et flexions in Danish. The current grammatical norm remains uncertain, which makes these forms a debatable subject among linguists. Examining the status of verbal forms with -en inflexion, we trace their origin and genesis in the Danish verb paradigm, as well as their syntactical features throughout the development of the Danish language. The analysis shows that verbal forms with -en inflexion have transformed to standalone grammatical form, which can be defined as ‘participle adjectives’.
